Wire Armature Sculpture

How to make a wire armature for polymer clay. (Large sized.)?

I want to make an armature for a sculpey project I’m just working on on and off… Thinking about adding a body to a dragon head I had started on. For a sculpture about a foot high what gauge wire should and use?

I would recommend copper wire of two sizes. A heavy wire to make the basic structure and a smaller size to fill it in and tie it together. I really do not know what guage works best but you can go to the hardware store and see what feels best. They may have some bare wire or you may have to strip the insulation off yourself. I have not tried this with Sculpey but it works well with Celluclay which is a paper mache’ claylike material. If you are not set firmly on using Sculpey you may consider trying Celluclay. You can dry it in your oven too and it’s a lot cheaper. If you use Celluclay mix it on the dry side and put a base coat over the armature. Dry it at low temperature and apply a detail coat over it. This will give you a solid object to work on. If the final coat cracks just fill them and dry it again. I use this material extensively in my work. I just finished a 2 1/2 foot dragon.
