Wedding Cakes With Personality

Weddings are so much more fun than they used to be, don’t you think? They have become less about doing what is traditional and more about allowing the bride and groom to be creative and expressive. In no part of the wedding is this more true than the cake. To make your wedding truly memorable, design a great wedding cake with personality.

When your mother and grandmother were brides, wedding cakes were one color: white. They were also almost always one shape: round. Not only that, but the only acceptable decorations were things like flowers, Swiss dots (especially for brides wearing pearl bridal jewelry), and ribbons. On the top, a prim little bride and groom could be perched, or perhaps a pair of doves or a set of wedding bells. The cake inside was also highly likely to be a basic yellow or white cake. These classic wedding cakes were pretty enough, but they did not allow much opportunity for creative expression.

When it comes to wedding cakes these days, the only rule is that there are no rules! If you are a classic bride wearing your mother’s bridal gown and pearl jewelry, you might still want an all white cake, although yours is more likely to have your monogram on top than a plastic bride and groom figurine. And a white exterior does not necessarily mean a standard flavor of cake on the inside. Brides and grooms are choosing all sorts of flavors, from spice cake to red velvet cake to rich dark chocolate.

Most couples will still choose a somewhat traditional form for their wedding cake, consisting of three or five tiers. Round is still the most popular, but square cakes are also very much in favor. Something else that is being seen more often is cakes with tiers that are intentionally stacked to look crooked or wacky, as well as having a different shape for each tier of the cake. And then there are those couples who throw tradition completely out the window, and have a totally custom cake made like a little three dimensional sculpture in their favorite form. This has long been the custom for groom’s cakes, but now it is also being done for the main wedding cake as well.

It is great fun to design a wedding cake that either is the perfect expression of your wedding theme or that showcases the interests of the bride and groom (even if it does not tie in with the rest of the wedding). For instance, if you were having a tropical wedding, your cake could feature an underwater scene with a profusion of brightly colored tropical fish swimming in a coral reef, all made from fondant and frosting. Or if you met at college, you could have your wedding cake made in your school colors. Why not take it one step further, and have it play the school fight song?

There is no limit to how creative and expressive a wedding cake can be. Cake designers are able to do the most amazing things with cakes these days, including incorporating sound or moving parts. Of course, you may just end up with a cake that looks too incredible to eat!
