What kind of works should I include in my portforlio for grad school application?

The application is for the biomedical communications program at University of Toronto (i.e Medical Illustration). Their requirement is this: “A portfolio of visual material should demonstrate competence in areas such as life drawing, portraits, graphic illustration, sculpture, and photography. The adjudication committee assesses the use of composition and design in these media. Examples should include the use of colour, tone and line”
I’m not too familiar with traditional mediums, so I’m wondering what kinds of tools should I use to create the artworks? And what are some good subject matters for this kinds of submissions? Thanks!

It seems pretty weird to me that a medical program would require artistic skills but I suppose the connection is anatomy. You could take a life-drawing class and submit the results.
