Can I pursue sculpture?
I’m in high school, and I just finished my sculpture class. I LOVED it. I made my head out of clay, did an abstract chiseled stone (my fave!), and a piece of pop art. I would like to do the next class, but I am not sure if I will have the opportunity to, based on hoe many people enroll. Is there any way that I would be able to pursue sculpture in college and possibly as a career if I have not taken an AP course?
Of course. You take that class if you can. Tell you a secret that I have used many times! I did not finish college and spent many years in a career in sales. When I was older than your mother probably is now, I decided to go back to college and study sculpture. People thought I was crazy. The first class offered in sculpture was a junior level class. The catalogue said you had to have had some other classes before you took this one. So the registration would not let me register for it, pl.us the person helping me said the class was full and only if the professor agreed could I register. I went over to his office and told him who I was and what I wanted to do, and asked him if he would agree to let me in the the class. No, I did not beg or plead. simply stated that this was what I wanted, I would work hard, and could he help me out? please and thank you for your time… He let me in!!! he had to sign a slip and I had to go all the way back across campus to stand in line and register. I worked very hard, never been so tired, frustrated and dirty in all my life, but never had a more wonderful time.
I went on to graduate, but not in art as circumstances made it that I had to go ahead and get my degree and get done with it, so I changed course a little bit and got a degree in liberal studies, with a minor in art. I now sculpt in several media, and have won money and awards. Even tho I am not well known (yet) I am selling my work and enjoying my life tremendously.
if you really really really love it. go for it. don’t let anything stop you , and when you are tired, dirty and thinking you are out of your mind, just take a little time out by yourself. if you are meant to do it, it will come back to you…and you to it.
