Oslo – Norway
I remember the feeling of standing on deck in the early morning – watching the stunning scenery of the Oslo fjord gliding by and feeling blessed.
Besides from beauty Oslo has a lot to offer the visitor. Oslo is known as an important maritime city in Europe and is headquarter for a number of the world’s largest companies within the maritime world, such as shipbuilding, shipping and ship brokers.
Of course you can go maritime as well – in the form of mini-cruises on the Oslo fjord. Most of them start in front of Oslo’s impressive City Hall, and they last from 1 to several hours. It is a great way to see Oslo, and you will be offered sightseeing on your way. Among the offers you will find the Viking Ship Museum, the Kon-Tiki Raft, the Norwegian Folk Museum, the Holmenkollen Ski Jump with museum and Vigeland Sculpture Park.
If you are fascinated by the Viking era the Viking Ship Museum, located on the Bygdoy Peninsula, is a must. Here you can experience a Viking burial vessel dating back to the 9th century.
The Kon-Tiki Raft is the real deal. The Balsawood Raft, that Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl used to sail across the Pacific Sea from Peru to Polynesia back in 1947, can still be viewed in Oslo. You will find that on the Bygdoy Peninsula as well.
A visit to the Norwegian Folk Museum will make you feel that you have traveled back in time. The beautiful old buildings make up the world’s oldest open air museum, and the exhibits feature daily life and living condition in Norway from the 16th century to present time.
The Holmenkollen Ski Jump hosts the annual World Cup in Nordic disciplines and biathlon. The Ski Museum lets you experience 4000 years of exciting skiing history through an amazing show.
To my knowledge there is nowhere in the whole world, besides from Oslo, where you can visit a sculpture park, and see more than 200 sculptures made by the same artist. This park features the lifework of Gustav Vigeland; sculptures made in bronze, granite and wrought iron.
Oslo was rated the most expensive city in the world in 2009 – but don’t let that stop you! Where there’s a will there’s a way! From only €28 you can buy an Oslo Pass which gives you free admission to 27 museums and Oslo attractions, and furthermore free travel on public transport, discounts on shopping, food and a variety of Oslo attractions.
