The Outdoor Pursuits of Symonds Yat

The English village of Symonds Yat is a popular tourist destination. It lies in a magical borderland fought over for centuries by the English and the Welsh. Symonds Yat itself is split into two counties due to the River Wye. Symonds Yat East is in Gloucestershire, and Symonds Yat West in Herefordshire. It is part of The Wye Valley, a region designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, much traversed by artists, poets and writers.

The area is replete with ancient castles, and its tranquil charm and elusive beauty can be viewed from a canoe or pleasure-boat.  Canoeing down the rapids is particularly popular.

In the neighbouring Forest of Dean, which soars to 290 metres at its highest point, one can enjoy walking, mountain biking and cycling. This ancient forest was designated the country’s first National Forest Park in 1938, and is surrounded by free roaming sheep and fallow deer.  One can also follow the extraordinary Sculpture Trail near the historic Speech House.

Otters have returned to the river Wye, and peregrine falcons can be observed at Symonds Yat, where they nest every year.

The 500 feet high Symonds Yat Rock is not only one of the country’s best viewpoints, but also an excellent climbing venue. There is no shortage of climbing routes to suit all abilities, and beneath the limestone rocks of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley, lie beautiful grottos and rock formations in a fascinating subterranean world. The area is suitable for individuals or groups and is also ideal for other activities such as Tyrolean traversing and abseiling.

For sport there is clay shooting and a wide choice of golf courses. At Symonds Yat West there is also a history-linked miniature golf course.

Children can let off steam at the well-established Leisure Park, whilst the adults relax at the cafeteria on site. For more leisurely activity, the amazing Jubilee Maze and Butterfly Zoo are not only interesting but educational.
