Getting to Know Flamenco, the Andalusian Music and Dance Art Form

Music and Dance are very attractive art forms that mostly go with one another; each culture has a unique tradition of music and dance to contribute to the world. It is at most employed for religious worship, for rituals and fiestas, as an expression of love, or sometimes as a prelude to war.

Music also played a vital role in Spain’s culture and history; the biggest influence in Spain’s music is the Roman culture because they have been a major cultural reign for hundreds of years, even introducing the influence of Greek music. Spain’s cultural influences contained mostly the Ancient Roman and Greek music and dance method, although several other influences came and present their identity in Spain’s history such as the Visigoths, Jews, Moors, and the likes. It would be much more interesting to study the history of Spain by knowing its language; basic Spanish is a great way to start and this can be easily done by starting off with basic lessons from sites like Rocket Spanish. Rocket Spanish Download is an excellent tool that can aid you in learning to speak Spanish.

Flamenco, which is from Spain is popular around that world and is condered to be widely known in all regions of Spain. Flamenco is universally recognized as something that is iconic to Spanish culture; ironically though, Flamenco is a music and dance technique that was only known in Andalusia which is one of Spain’s biggest, poorest regions. However, a quick study of the history of Flamenco will show you that this couldn’t be farther from the truth; Flamenco is actually only popular in one part of Spain which is the Andalusian region.

Flamenco, an Andalusian traditional folk music, has three components; one is cante or song, the baile or dance and the guitarra or guitar. The style of Flamenco that originated from Andalusia is known for its intricate and fast passages, and the dance is described by audible footwork similar to tap dancing. It also portrays the unique culture of Spain; however, studies investigating the ancestries of Flamenco are still inconclusive until today.

An undeniable fact states that Flamenco came from the lower levels of society in Andalusia; during the hard periods that a number of people have prejudices against Gypsies which various people believe have influence on the roots of Flamenco. It’s not entirely astonishing that historians didn’t make much effort to study nor record the development of this art form; it simply wasn’t a priority back then; Gypsies were considered to be the bottom of the barrel as far as social caste system is concerned. The inhabitants of Andalusia who were also supporters of the art form did not acquire much education and had no way of recording their own history; most were Jews, Moors and the likes who were, like Gypsies, regarded to be parts of the lower class of Spanish society. Another reason for problems in knowing the history of Flamenco is that the lower class people have no education and cannot write and they just maintained the music through oral traditions; worst of all, the Jews, Muslims and Gitanos, which make up the lower class, were being persecuted throughout the period of Spanish Inquisition.

Even in the modern generation, historians and experts are still studying and researching to find out the main root and history of Flamenco; even the origins of the name is still unsolved. In fact, it did not just prevail but it flourished and really grown into a widely studied music and dance technique until today.
