Is Greece (during the classical age) part of European tradition? (Art History)?
Hey, i’m taking an Ap Art History class in High School, and i have to write an essay on two works that are similiar, but one can’t be from the “European Tradition.” I have one from Greece and England. But, i’m not really sure if the Greek sculpture is part of the European tradition. The Greek one is the “Dying Warrior” from the Pediment on the Temple of Aphaia. The one from England is the Tomb of the Knight. Thanks.
baisically ancient greece and its art is the cornerstone of european culture.
If you take dying warrior for example you can see that he looks really all natural. To paint/ produce natural looking artworks was the main aim in european culture from rennaisance when antiquity was rediscovered (started around 1500) to modern timess. there also would be no modern art because these artist by choice started a revolution against the very formal and strict natural looking paintings. They argued that this formalism imprisioned their creativity. – Take picasso for an example.
