Discover the Creative Side of Venice on a City Break
If you love exploring vibrant and cultural cities, a stay in Venice hotels should be at the top of your list of things to do.
The city is literally bursting with creativity and is home to some of Italy’s finest art collections, as well as many buildings displaying truly breathtaking architecture.
But where should you begin when you embark on a day of sightseeing from your discount hotels?
Well, the perfect place to start would be with a quintessentially Venetian experience – a ride in a gondola.
From your vantage point on the waterways, you will be able to fully appreciate some of the beautiful architecture in the city. It is especially worth seeking out some of the 200 palaces located in Venice, with some dating back as far as the 13th century.
One landmark that you must be sure to pass by is the Doge’s Palace – or Palazzo Ducale – which has a rich history and boasts some stunning archways on its southern facade.
After your sedate ride in a gondola, you should move on to some of the city’s museums and the perfect place to start is the Accademia Gallery.
Home to famous pieces by the likes of Giorgione, Veronese, Guardi, Canaletto and Tintoretto, you are bound to love strolling through its exhibitions and being surrounded by fantastic examples of Venetian and renaissance heritage.
The exhibits are arranged in a roughly chronological order, making it relatively straightforward to navigate your way around and enjoy all the artwork on show.
From here, you may want to turn your attention to some more contemporary examples of art, in which case, a visit to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection should be your next stop.
Situated in Palazzo Venier dei Leoni – Peggy Guggenheim’s former home – the exhibits are comprised of examples from her own private collection, spanning European and American artists from the early 20th century.
Famous names such as Picasso, Dali, Duchamp and Kandinsky can be found on the walls here – but the displays inside are not the only ones you should take in.
The grounds of the palace are home to the Patsy R and Raymond D Nasher Sculpture Collection, which is made up of pieces by sculptors including Gilardi, Goldsworthy, Holzer, Mirko and Ernst, as well as a number of statues on loan from other private collections or foundations.
And if you are keen to spend another day immersed in some modern art, why not take in the Palazzo Grassi before heading home? The venue plays host to three or four large exhibitions by prominent contemporary artists each year, so you never know what you might find when you walk through the doors here.
