Hike Through Orchids And Waterfalls On A Spring Vacation In The Smokey Mountains
There are many magnificent areas to see throughout the United States, such as Galinburg, Tennessee. If you have never visited the Smokey Mountains, this can be the wonderful family vacation time, and you can tally it with SpringFest: a three month program of entertainment and enjoyment, coupled with a riot of stunning natural beauty.
Around spring time, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has recuperated from the harsh weather, giving way to the blossoming of flowers across the half-million acres of cascading hills, rivers, and SpringFest falling onto the roads. The misty blue peaks of the Smokies jog this artsy town. One of the greatest places to experience is the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, a hip, airy studio and gallery in the center of Gatlinburg. It’s bustling with artists at work all day, and you can admire paintings, woodwork and sculptures.
Of course, there the Smokies… and it seems like a lot of people get distracted along the way with other amusements. There are landmarks straddling the Parkway, not to mention museums, a haunted house, plus an aquarium with a walk-through shark lagoon.
And there’s food! You can gratify your hunger appetite with anything from sushi to pork, to vegetable and tropical fruit fajitas. Oh, and there are pancake houses everywhere with so many varieties, you’ll be full before stuffing that pig-in-a-blanket down. Thirsty? Margaritas pitchers are tumbling on all the restaurants in the area.
At this point, you should have enough calories in your system to hike the more than 800 miles of trails in the Great Smoky Mountains Nation Regional Park and just as many waterfalls. You’ll be sharing the footpaths and falling water with some of the 31 species of salamanders crawling through the Smokies, along with other critters. Or if you prefer rafting, you can river-raft one of the 70 rapids on a 6.5 stretch of the upper Big Pigeon River – it can be a fun 2 hour tumbling trip in which you won’t be able to stay dry even if you keep paddling and maintain your center of gravity. This will probably open up your appetite for desserts. Gatlinburg has some of the best cafes in Tennessee – they serve fluffy coconut pies and creamy chocolate-chip cheesecakes, all made from scratch, with homemade lemonade.
Getting there is easy! The Knoxville airport is about an hour away from Gatlinburg, and car rentals are cheap; you’ll need one to get around Great Smoky Mountains National Park. While you’re in the area of Gatlinburg, remember that there certainly are countless alternatives for lodging accommodations, including hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts as well as Bluegreen resort options obtainable from the Bluegreen corporation. In Gatlinburg, most of the accommodations are along River Road, and they offer plenty of room for big families.
