Ideas for casting materials?
I’m taking a sculpture class and have made a mold of my object using silicone caulk, but I’m not sure what kind of materials I can use to cast in that type of mold. I know I can cast plaster, concrete, and paraffin wax but was wondering if anyone knew of some other (perhaps less common?) materials I could also use. Thanks!
Silicone will stand up to the melting point of lead, especially if you don’t overheat the lead, and are making a limited number. Dump the lead casting as soon as it is solid to remove the heat soak effects to make it last longer.
With release for safety, you can cast acrylic clear or colored resin in silicone.
You could soften/warm modeling clay and push it into the mold and get it out if the mold is not too stiff so it bends the clay getting it out. Polyclay will probably release and the silicone mold will stand the baking temp of polyclay so you could harden it in the mold.
You could buy or mix plastic wood and push it into the mold to make wood like copies. Takes a while to harden I think silicone will release, but you might do a test.
