Whats the point of Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate, aka The Bean in Chicago?

I have to write a 7 page paper about the style of The Bean…..and well I’m completely clueless. I’m taking my first art history class, but most of our studying involves paintings. Studying this sculpture is a lot harder than I thought. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I’m guessing there is probably symbolism w/ the mirror/reflection…..
any ideas?

He describes it himself on the Millenium Park’s website. Also have a look at the Wikipedia entry.

Of course, it is a type of gate. It is also an ‘omphalos’ (like the one at Delphi – the belly button of the world). If you enter the sacred chamber, you are like the ancient priestesses who communed with the old gods. And, and, ….. I think it is meant to put people in touch (literally) with themselves and the great City around them, by changing their perspective. The great Marsyas, which was a site-specific piece for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, was something else. But I’m glad I don’t have to describe the something else. Of course, you don’t have to agree with anything that anyone else says – that’s the joy of art criticism.
