I need to find allusions to mythology in poems, books, science, and art. Can someone help me, please?
ex: Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven references the bust of Pallas Athena
ex: Sculpture of Pygmalion and Galatea
I’m looking for specific poems or books, that have allusions to myths in them.
I used the sculpture of Pygmalion and Galatea because it is based on the myth of Pygmalion, the king who fell in love with a statue of a woman. She came to life and he married her.
Anything that is neoclassic contains references to myths. Also, part of the romantic/dandy culture was about quoting classic mythology.
Here some references (literature):
- Ruskin
-Oscar Wilde, Picture of Dorian Grey: reference to Narcissus; also in the pome, The Sphinx there are many references to Egyptian and Greek mythology. See this very nice essay on the poem:

-Mary Shelley, Frankenstein: reference to the Golem (jewish mythology)
-Percy Bysshe Shelley, Prometheus Unbound (reference to Prometheus);
in Ode to the West Wind the poet, great classicist, makes a reference to the greek mythology, for explaining the phenomenon of the storm and of the rain, saying that rain is formed by the hair of the angels that are loosing energy, and by the hair of some menade whose are took by the hair.
ART:
-Turner: Garden of the Hesperides; Apollo and Python; Glaucus and Scylla
