How to create abstract an sculpture?
Just wondering how do people come up with abstract shapes or forms to create a sculptural piece based on a theme/idea.
First understand that all art is an abstraction. Even if a painting, for instance, is photo realistic it is an abstraction of the thing it is representing. With that in mind, you might think of “abstracting as the evolving of an image into a simplified or distilled representation. Simplified in than only the bare essentials needed to represent the image remain. An example of this can be see in the work by the British sculptor Henry Moore with his “abstracted” human figures. Even though the detail has been worked out of the form, the basic human form and gesture remains.
The surrealist painter Rene Magritte addressed this in the painting, “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” ( In English,”This is not a pipe.”) It is a rendering of a pipe, not the real thing.
